FALL TENNIS INSTRUCTOR COURSE: Tennis NB will be offering a fall instructor course in September in Dieppe. The dates for the course are September 10-12 & September 24-26. This is a 2 weekend course and attendance at all sessions is mandatory. The registration fee for the course is $200.00. For more information or to register, contact the Tennis NB office.

Moscovitch impressive at NB Open

Mischa Moscovitch of Toronto won both the men's singles title and men's doubles title at the NB Open which wrapped up late Sunday night at the Rothesay Tennis Club. En route to the singles title, Mischa upset the top 3 seeds, defeating #1 Mathieu Girouard in the quarterfinals (6-4,6-4), #3 Marc Pepin in the semis (6-4,6-3), and #2 Pat Lyons in the finals (6-4, 6-1). He teamed up with David McGavin also of Toronto to claim the men's doubles title, again taking out all the top seeds along the way including the #1 seeded team of Pat Lyons & Glenn Cleland in the finals by scores of 4-6, 6-0, 10-4. Charlotte Wong of Charlottetown won the ladies singles title defeating #1 seed Julie Devlin in the final 6-3, 6-3. In ladies doubles, Barb Ramsay of Fredericton and Heather MacMillan of Vancouver claimed top prize with a win over Lynda Rogers of Rothesay and Melika LeBlanc of Moncton in the finals by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Julie Devlin and Marc Deschenes of Fredericton came away with the mixed doubles title with a win in the finals over Heather MacMillan and Paul Elliott of Fredericton in a tight match winning 6-0, 4-6, 10-8.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES AND WILSON PLAYER OF THE YEAR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

Tennis New Brunswick will be holding its first ever Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet this Friday evening in the ballroom of the Chateau Moncton. A total of 8 individuals will be honoured as the first inductees into the Hall. in the player category: David Piers (New Maryland), Marius King (Grand Falls) and Marc Pepin (Fredericton); in the builder category: Lina Richard (Moncton), Frank Remete (Saint John) and Michael Ryan (Hampton). There will also be two honorary inductees: Frank Flanagan (Fredericton) who is a current member of the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame, and Ethel Babbitt (Fredericton) who is a current member of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. The Tennis New Brunswick Hall of Fame will temporarily be located in the club house of the Moncton Tennis Club. The 2009 Wilson Players of the Year Awards will also be announced. The finalists for the Players of the Year for each category are as follows:

The Moncton region will be the site of the East Coast Open tournament taking place in conjunction with the awards banquet. More than 100 players from around the Maritimes will be vying for titles in more than 25 divisions being played on 23 courts at the Moncton Tennis Club, the Dieppe Tennis Club and the Riverview Tennis Club. Play begins on Friday morning and continues until Sunday evening.

PEPIN WINS EUROPEAN TITLE

For only the second time in the 53 year history of the European Senior Championships a Canadian has won a gold medal. Marc Pepin of Fredericton teamed up with Sabine Schmitz of Germany to claim the Mixed Doubles event in Baden Baden, Germany. They defeated the #2 seeds from France, Yves Montois and Caroline Glaszman 6-1, 6-4 in the semi finals before upsetting the defending European Champions and #1 seeded German team of Rainer Friemel and Suzanna Schweda 7-6(3), 7-6(10) in the finals. Pepin also picked up a silver medal in the 50+ Men's Doubles event with partner Frederick Rocha Ponte from Brazil after losing to the #2 seeds Pierre Godfroid of Belgium and Marius Rozentals of Latvia in the finals 6-3, 6-3. In 50+ men's singles, after a first round bye, Pepin defeated Ernst Paimberger from Germany 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Gerd Wilde the 8th seed from Germany 6-1, 6-4 in the third round match. This was Pepin's best ever performance in an international event.

Pepin to Launch Book

Marc Pepin will be launching his book, "Slice and Dice: Tennis in NB Since 1975" on Friday, May 21st. It is 182 pages long and contains 331 photographs and is an autobiographical approach to tennis in New Brunswick and abroad including stats, anecdotes, great matches, and funny stories. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be given to Tennis NB. The book will sell for $22 and can be purchased by contacting Marc at pepindj@nbnet.nb.ca. Marc will be doing a book signing tour which will begin on Friday evening, May 21st, at the I Rock Club in Fredericton from 5pm - 8pm and Saturday, May 22nd at the Regent Mall in Fredericton from 1pm - 3pm. He will also be visiting tennis clubs throughout the province as follows: Rothesay, Tuesday, May 25, 5:00pm - 6:30pm, Saint John (Shamrock Park), Tuesday, May 25, 7:00pm - 8:30pm, Dieppe, Saturday, May 29, 12:00pm - 1:30pm, Riverview, Saturday, May 29 2pm - 3:30pm, Moncton, Sunday, May 30 12:00pm - 1:00pm.

2010 Tennis NB Junior Provincial Team Program

The Tennis New Brunswick Provincial Program will work to regroup the top committed players in the province to prepare players for the summer competitive season provincially, regionally and nationally and serve as a stepping stone to the Atlantic Tennis Program and National Training Center (NTC) that regroups the top players in Atlantic Canada and subsequently players who might qualify for the National Training Center program.

The 2010 program will regroup the top committed players for training camps scheduled to complement the competitive schedule already in place. The camps will be split into two distinct groups: U8/U10/U12 and 13+ over. Each group will receive three - 90 minutes sessions per camp.

The first camp is scheduled to take place in Moncton. Camp 2 & 3 may be held in another city depending on the location of players involved in the program. Camp 4, prior to Atlantics, will be held in Moncton. Camp 5, prior to NB Open/Outdoor Nationals will likely be held in the Saint John region to accommodate those playing in the NB Open.

Tennis NB Hall of Fame & Awards Banquet

Tennis New Brunwick is pleased to announce that the 1st Annual Tennis NB Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Banquet will be held in Moncton on Friday evening, July 2, 2010. The banquet will be held in conjuntion with the East Coast Open, a new event being hosted by Tennis NB which will include play in the Juinor Divison, the Open Division and the Masters Division with play to take place on 23 courts at the 3 local tennis clubs (Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview) from July 2-4. Nominations are now being accepted for individuals for induction into the Hall of Fame in two categories: Player and Builder. Nomination forms are available by contacting the Tennis NB office at 444-0885 or tnb@tennisnb.net. The deadline for nominations is May 1, 2010. Also, the 2009 Players of the Year will be announced and presented at the awards banquet.

Marc Pepin and Glenn Cleland, both from Fredericton, had strong showings at the 2010 Canadian Eastern Indoor Championships held this past weekend in Toronto.

Pepin, competing in the 50+ division, got by John Long (Ont) in his first round match by scores of 6-0,7-6(6), before dropping his quarter final match to Carey Wilson (QC) 5-7,6-0,6-0. He then went on to win his first two rounds in the consolation draw, defeating Doug Won Kang (MAN) 6-0,6-2 and Owen Pellew (ONT) 6-2,6-4 before falling to David Anderson (NS) in the consolation finals 7-5,7-6(5) to finish 6th overall. He then teamed with David Anderson in the doubles to defeat Malea (ONT)/Rockwell (NS) in the quarters 6-3,6-2, and Wilson (QUE)/Redvers (ONT) in the semis 6-4,6-1 before falling in the finals to Pellew (ONT)/Khattash (ONT) 3-6,6-2,6-3.

Cleland, competing in the 45+ division, dropped his first round match to Peter Straub (ONT) 6-3,1-6,6-3, but then went on to win his consolation matches defeating Iman Syed (ONT) 7-5,6-3 and Cary Shayman (ONT) 6-1,6-0 to finish 5th overall. He teamed with Oliver Kraut (ONT) to defeat the team of Shay (ONT)/Daunier (ONT) 6-4,3-6,6-2, before falling in the semi finals to Meanchos (ONT)/Beck (ONT) 6-0,6-3.
